Close Loop System:This system is for total collector freeze protection (to -54F) in hard freeze areas.
Tankless water heaters are a great complement to solar water heaters (see below).
| Open Loop System:This system is for use in completely non freeze areas or with light freeze options
If used with tankless (see blow), be sure the Tankless unit has a “Modulation” feature to vary the flame or electric input depending on the temperature the solar water heating system is supplying.

Selecting Right Size Close Loop System: This system is for 60 to 70% coverage in areas subject to hard freeze and a lot of clouds. Start with four 10-01 or two 20-01 collectors for the first two people and then two 10-01 collectors or one 20-01 collector for every additional two people. For example, a family of 4 should have six 10-01 collectors or three 20-01 collector (40 square feet). Following are most common sizes: System 200152C80EX: (40 s/f) Two Collector for 80 Gallon EX Tank System 200153C80EX: (60 s/f) Three Collector for 80 Gallon EX Tank System 200154C80EX: (80 s/f) Four Collector for 80 Gallon EX Tank | Selecting Right Size OpenLoop System: This system is for 65 to 90% coverage in warmer, sunny areas. Use two 10-01 collectors or one 20-01 collector (20 square feet) for each two to three people in the household. For example, a family of 4 should have four 10-01 collectors or two 20-01 collector (40 square feet). You may be able to use your existing electric water heater or, for open loop systems 1, 2 and 3, or you can add a low cost water heater for solar storage to your existing water heater. You need at least 1 gallon of storage for each square foot of collector area. It is desirable that your storage tank be at least 50 gallons of storage for up to 40 square feet of collector area, although a 40 gallon water heater can work well with up to 30 square feet of collector area. Generally, the larger the water heater the better, up to 2.5 gallons per square foot of collector area in sunny areas. Following are most common sizes: System 200131C50: One Collector for 50 Gallon Tank System 200132C50 or 80: Two Collectors for 50 Gallon Tank System 200133C50 or 80: Three Collectors for 50 Gallon Tank FVO4 - Freeze Valve Option For Light Passive freeze protection to 30F For Standard Stacked Array, Includes special plumbing connections: FULLY DRAIN BEFORE HARD FREEZE FVO5 - Freeze Valve Option For Light Passive freeze protection to 30F For 24' Side by side Array, Includes special plumbing connections: FULLY DRAIN BEFORE HARD FREEZE FS03 - For PV Panel Recirculation* Freeze protection use includes 40F Freeze Snap Switch with 25' wire 110V to 12VDC Transformer for a higher level of Freeze Protection in light freeze areas |
These systems are Performance Certified when installed to SRCC (Solar Rating and Certification Corporation) OG300 Specifications and tank sizes. When properly installed and maintained, these systems meet the minimum standards established by SRCC. The SRCC certification does not imply endorsement or Warranty of this product by SRCC.
These systems are powered by Photovoltaic Pumps (Circulators). They cost a little more but it is nice to know that your system operates 100% by the sun, and not be effected by power outages. PV is sometimes easier to install as it eliminates the need for a nearby 110 Volt power outlet.
